My Spray Tan Turned Me Orange

I want to chat with you about the number one fear of all people considering getting a spray tan. Turning orange!!! You may have seen that horrid episode on Friends where Chandler and the tanning booth had a messy encounter.

TANNING BOOTHS AND CUSTOM SPRAY TANNING ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

First of all, tanning booths and airbrush/custom spray tanning are two totally different experiences.  Think drive-through car wash versus hand detailed. When you have an experienced sunless artist tan apply your tan, you are much more likely to have an even natural-looking tan.

Tanning artists have so much control over the products and the application process, unlike a machine operated booth. Not downplaying the booth, but a more precise application makes a difference to avoid the brassy or orange look that can happen when tanning solutions are not applied correctly.

LET’S LOOK AT THE THREE LEADING CAUSES OF THE DREADED ORANGE TAN

  1. Oversaturation – Using too many products tends to create an unnatural colour.
  2. DHA levels, which are too high for skin types – If you are naturally fair, it is not recommended to go too dark. You need to understand how the skin reacts to different levels and undertones of solutions.
  3. Not prepping the skin properly – This can happen, especially in drier areas or where there is diffident skin texture such as the hands and the feet.
